Story Summary of Jo Bachay Hain Sang Samait Lo
The story revolves around Sikandar Shehryar, a 32-year-old Harvard law graduate and lawyer who lives alone and suffers from insomnia and nightmares. Behind his successful, controlled exterior is a painful past that has left him broken and distant from everyone around him. His younger brother Zain is one of the few people close to him, but even family cannot reach the part of Sikandar that the past has damaged.
In Rome, Italy, Sikandar’s path crosses with Liza, whose full name is Umme Kulsoom, an Italian-raised artist with Pakistani roots, full of life and warmth. Liza’s mother was Italian and her father Pakistani, and she has her own troubled past and a complicated family: her elder sister, known as Umme Mariyam or Saim, is estranged from the family and hides a manipulative side that no one suspects. As Sikandar and Liza grow closer, their love story slowly peels back layer after layer of family secrets, betrayal, and trauma.
The novel’s great twist, which readers discuss more than almost any other, is the discovery of who really destroyed Sikandar’s past: a truth that connects the two families in a way neither Sikandar nor Liza expected. Farhat Ishtiaq writes this revelation with the skill of her best work, turning a love story into a story about truth, forgiveness, and healing. Set across Italy, London, and Pakistan, and titled from a line associated with Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poetry, the novel is both a sweeping romance and a psychological family drama.
